Shakespeariana is a digital archive of images and texts related to Shakespearean plays, their adaptations and re-writings; a meta-archive of iconographical and textual materials, from paintings loosely inspired by drama, to stage photos. Documents available in the database cover the chronological span ranging from 1700 to the present time. The theoretical basis on which the project is founded is the concept of texts' illustration and re-elaboration. We aim to find connections between iconographical documents and adaptations of Shakespeare's plays by offering a large and heterogeneous catalogue of documents. The database is organized in a complex system of digital research possibilities: the user can make a single-field search or a combined one, looking for specific or cross-fields data, following a thematic, geographic or chronologic path. Many Italian and foreign Institutions cooperate to the project, which has been the starting pointfor international symposiums and scientific publications. Considering the vastness of the project, Shakespeariana is a work in progress depending on the Laboratorio Teatrale of the Department of Humanities. It is carried on by a research team lead by Professor Sandra Pietrini, coordinated by Valeria Tirabasso and made up by scholars, doctoral candidates, graduate and undergraduate students.
